This variety is chosen for its compact, neat habit, and its great color. Deep greenish red leaves have purple tips and are larger than the other two cultivars. Purple-pink flower spikes in mid-summer.

Performs best in full sun in sandy, extremely well-drained soil. Feed yearly with an organic fertilizer. Drought tolerant once established. Many 'Chicks' can be seen outside the main rosettes of foliage in late spring. These can be left untouched or removed and rooted in other parts of the landscape.
